Notarized Birth Certificate Copy: Definition & How to Get One

What is a Notarized Birth Certificate Copy?

A notarized birth certificate copy is a photocopy of an official birth certificate that has been verified and signed by a notary public. However, notarization does not make the copy legally valid for official use—only certified birth certificates issued by the state Vital Records Office hold legal authority.

When is a Notarized Birth Certificate Copy Needed?

  • Immigration and visa applications requiring extra document authentication.
  • Legal name changes, marriage, or dual citizenship applications.
  • Educational or professional verification processes abroad.

How to Obtain a Notarized Birth Certificate Copy?

  1. Obtain a certified birth certificate from the Vital Records Office.
  2. Make a photocopy of the original document.
  3. Visit a licensed notary public and present the original and copy.
  4. The notary verifies the document and applies a notarization seal.

Important: Some countries require an apostille in addition to notarization for international use.
